Inspirational Gardens

"This is a great little garden. It would be easy to be lost here - lost in admiration."

"Judith is, first and foremost, a plant collector."

1001 Gardens You Must See Before You Die

"On a Island that made its name for potatoes and bedding plants it is refreshing to discover a gardener with a botanical slant, and who takes full advantage of the mild climate. Judith Quérée, an avid collector and inspired artist, has packed her small garden with unusual plants and elegant features created by her husband, Nigel, an instinctive craftsman.

The garden, wrapped around a 300 year old granite cottage and set in the side of a shallow valley, is approached by a single track leading straight into a collection of 1,500 different plants with 250 clematis for year round flowers and 40 primulas, all grown on organic principles. The upper part gently slopes in front of the cottage, and this south facing microclimate is a haven for plants Spanish Shawl (Heterocentron elegans) from Central America and Pelargonium endlicherianum that remain outdoors year-round; a nearby raised bed includes most of Judith's salvia collection, and plants usually reserved for British conservatories. Beyond the house, a woodland garden, packed with rarities, is shaded from the sun by a slatted pergola that leads into a bog garden viewed from an elegant boardwalk. The proximity to the sea inspired a maritime theme, with an old rowing boat beached in the shade of a palm like tree fern and fishing nets draped around the garden to provide the perfect climbing frame for roses.

Judith's attention to detail and passion for plants gives the garden a sense of structure and guarantees a surprise around every corner, skills that made her runner up in the BBC's Gardener of the Year 2000."
